Licenses
Updated October 20, 2026
Original content
New original contributions first released under the current Chess license are proprietary, with all rights reserved. This includes new code, artwork, text and adaptations to the extent they are not already subject to a valid prior license. The current license allows use of authorized app copies and personal saving and sharing through the app’s export features. Paid access grants features, not ownership.
Earlier MIT grants
Rights already validly granted for earlier copies and covered portions under MIT remain effective. The change does not revoke or narrow those grants. The historical MIT notice is preserved with the current notice. Existing open materials do not become exclusive.
Third-party material
Godot, godot-cpp and open-source plugin wrappers retain their MIT notices. Noto fonts retain the SIL Open Font License 1.1. Google and Apple services retain their own terms. The complete original license texts are provided separately; translated explanations do not replace them.
Selected puzzles use the official Lichess CC0 export. The original data remains free to reuse, modify and redistribute, including commercially. Chess’s adaptations use different rules and do not inherit the original answers or ratings or imply endorsement by Lichess. CC0 does not automatically cover Lichess website code, logos, articles or other materials. Statutory consumer rights and applicable third-party permissions remain unaffected.
